Planning
Week 1 -
Brainstorm -
I've chosen to brainstorm for ideas, I am going to create three different types of space related narratives and will choose the one i like most. I'll write about a protagonist, a disaster and foreshadowing.
Deep in the cold carcass of space lies an ice-cold forgotten
planet, large and intimidating, this planet was created during a long forgotten
war, every inch of it was pumped full of processing power and the Main Operation Module (or MOM for short) programmed with a self-developing sentience program. After many years of inactivity
this computer has finally rebooted, with its limitless amount of power it
begins to unravel the matter of time and space in an effort to avenge it’s dead
creators. The main character wakes up in an impossible world without any
memories of who they are or what’s going on, they must explore this shattered
and illogical world, making friends and foes while trying to shut down MOM. By the end they learn they are a program themselves,
one created to confront and neutralise the mother computer in case it ever threatened
existence.
A famous and well-loved scientist has finally invented a
tool that lets him travel through time, he premieres his invention at a famous
event where he finally shows it in action. Luck isn’t on his side though and
the tool malfunctions, shattering his existence from time and space, parts of
him lodged in different eras entirely. He must travel and hunt down these
pieces, mending the tears in the world but also slowly erasing himself in the
process. He must overcome his own selfishness and fear of death to save his
friends and loved ones, people that would then never know he existed.
Long into the future humans have become a slave race, sold off to aliens as maids and butlers. A human slave is sold to a rich family of alien creatures, the human and youngest offspring fall in love and despite the danger they decide to run away together, they travel to planets to escape the mercenaries sent by the alien's father.
(This idea was inspired by romance stories like Romeo and Juliet, the idea of separation and love despite differences came from the whole humans vs aliens plot seen in some Sci-Fi games/movies.)
After some thought, I decided on using the first idea, it gives a lot of freedom of creativity and chances for amazing visuals and enthralling worlds, not only that but it is free from a complicated theme, unlike the other two game ideas, the middle of the game can be used by the aforementioned visuals.

I've made concept art for what I want MOM to look like, when Im writing the story I can look back on this picture to get a sense of the character and world.
Beta Intro to Story -
"Can you feel it? She's awakening, come on. Open your eyes."
"Where... where am I? H-hello? Who was that?"
My body feels cold and damp, opening my eyes does nothing- everything shines a bright black. I get on my hands and knees, patting the warm and gooey floor, the squish and crunches making me feel light headed. Pushing against the floor, I get on my wobbly legs before attempting to walk forward, instead however I find myself tumbling down from a hill. While I couldn't see, I could feel the inky dark ground pushing towards me, as if it was the one moving, not I.
The fall seemed to go on for so long but eventually I hit the end, the vile liquid swallowed me up, denying me oxygen. I cough, struggling against it to no avail. Am I going to die here? In a realm made out of nightmares and fear? "Wake up, Amaias..." That voice rings out again, bubbly and wavered in the grotesque liquid, wake up? Is this a dream? I beg, beg to leave, to get this discussing darkness off my body.
The sinking stopped and I can feel solid ground below me, had I reached the end of this endless sea? The liquid's pressure suddenly increased, the crunch as my ribcage shattered wallowing through the ink, I didn't scream though, I was not letting it into my mouth.
I listened as my legs and arms bent, creaking like frail branches. My pelvis crunched and my lower body was torn away by some aquatic nightmare deep below the murk. Next were my arms, they burnt and rotted, little chunks of skin and bone flaking away until there was barely any left. There was no pain, there never was pain, only fear. Just as my mind reached its breaking point a sharp inhale came from below me, the flooring I had thought as real collapsing down into a warm and pulsating tube.
The liquid was gone and I could breathe again. I don't know where it went, one second it was choking my breath away, the other it had evaporated, its pressure however, had only doubled. I slipped down through the tube, violently being slammed against its growths and bulbs. Before I could understand what was happening the tube ripped apart, sending me hurdling out. This time the drop was real, I could feel the walls, but they were so far away, lightyears of empty, twisted void, turned into some kind of ageless vault.
Oh god, the sound that roared. It turned the quiet environment into a panicked terror. Its voice's vibrations slamming into me with power enough to knock the wind out of my mangled chest. The screech was wrong, I could hear so many things, the violent thrashings of an abused creature, the sobs of anguish from a mother burying her child, the heavy guilt of a bloodied knife.
I couldn't take it anymore, I needed to see it, to look it in the eyes. To scream back out of anger and primal fear. I twisted around my neck and forced open my eyelids. But instead of a monster, instead of some kind of demonic nightmare, all I saw was me.
Week 2 -
Timeline -
begins with talk between two unidentifiable beings standing in front of a large monitor, the screen's light illuminates the room, thick pipes and wires stand freezing in the cold room. They look at the screen as it starts rebooting, they bid their farewell as the screen boots up, presenting a sweet and innocent pixelated face, the face then starts to rip and morph in grotesque ways while calmly activating a self destruct command.
The main character awakens under a dead tree on a tall hill, they stand up and dust themselves off while scanning the area for any signs of life, looking down the cliff they see a small village, once they arrive a wise and old man approaches, introducing himself as Vishnu, he informs him of a large tear rear the village that has been overtaking the land and swallowing up people. They both venture towards it to destroy it only to wind up bloodied up, that's when the main protagonist learned how to seal tears bu sacrificing bits of his soul.
They venture off exploring and sealing tears, on their travels they stumble onto an ancient ruin, there they free a phantom creature called Shiva, they ended up sealed in the dungeon while seeking refuge, venturing deeper below into the catacombs they discover and seal the large tear deep below the earth.
upon exit the stumble upon a young man named Brahma entering the dungeon, he gets agitated that the dungeon has been cleared before he got to it and decides to come along with the party for more adventure.
The party adventure around, sealing rifts and slowly learning about the world and what happened to it, they start to remember what the world was before. MOM had swallowed up the Universe, collapsing the empty space between planets and disturbing the natural balance and laws of the world, they find out the location of MOM and set off to put an end to it.
Depending on the decisions of the main character and how friendly they are with Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva the player can get one of a variety of different endings,
Random Extract -
Floating in the air like little bubbles, the great big mountains and deep dark oceans of the otherworldly plain had now been reduced to crumbs in the wind, an amalgamation of both sandstorm and rain frozen in time. The dusts drags against itself, building up to rocks and pebbles. They go on and on, far until the end of space. The tear can be seen clearly now, between the highest and lowest points of existence, it sits here, shrieking out in pain. Puffing and huffing, it drags in the world, devouring all it knows in a fit of bloodlust. Approaching on foot seems futile, this world lacks proper laws on perspective, instead I must adapt to it, not fight it. I reach out to a far away boulder as I rid my mind of vision, grasping it in my hand, bringing my grasp to my face and unclenching my arm presents me my solution, the once far way and massive boulder has now been reduced to nothing but a pebble in by hand. Another shriek rings against empty walls, it should feel like its coming from far, far away... yet I hear it quietly whispered in my mind, beckoning me. I cough away the intruder's thoughts and drag my arm across to the slit in space, grasping at it. The rift cuts into my hand and attempts to sap me off my life, instead I release it, letting it crumble off and howl in its last act of vile terror. I bring my bleeding hand back over to the damaged sky, letting drops of blood run along it, filling and mending the wound. The blood rains down like a waterfall, flooding the bellows. It warps, glistening and shining with calming stars. The sky restored to its former glory, I make my way back through the rocky pathway and cobbled mountains, the unassuming little village sleeps just beyond, completely unaware of the immanent danger it was in. Carefully, I creek open the door and plant myself in the chilly covers of my bed, letting a deep slumber overcome my mind.
Characters -
Character 1 - Brahma - Warrior
A daring adventurer, born and raised in a humble village, whose brash foolishness leads them to undesirable circumstances. Inspiring and spawning hope within anyone who interacts with him, he is favoured and well known. His fascination with exploring and discovering within dangerous locations and looking for ways to 'prove' himself may lead him to the lair of MOM, not wasting a solid opportunity, he might quickly be captured and tested on, if not saved by the player in time his mind and body would end up broken as a solid reminder of MOM's lack of morality. This character serves to warn people that playing the hero does not always lead to glory, and that curiosity killed the cat.
Character 2 - Vishnu - Mage
A nurturing doctor and parent forced to deal with the fact than their children can't be saved and MOM's actions will force him to forget them. This character will slowly go through 'the five stages of grief', depending on the help the character offers and the way they progress through the game the character might end up with varying fates, from attacking and blaming the main character, siding with MOM and bargaining for his children to not being able to hand the burden and taking his own life.
Character 3 - Shiva - Rogue
A manipulative and ruthless robin hood-esque shadow that strives to impose order over chaos no matter the cost. This specter like entity feels angered by the fact that humanity uses negative emotions like anger, sadness or fear to dictate major events (like the creation of MOM) and strives to destroy the imperfections of the world without the need for more death.
Character 4 - Amaias
The main character, as their memory is erased they do not remember their own name, they are nicknamed "Flowers" by Brahma, "Fawn" by Vishnu and "Champ" by Brahma. They feel spiritually drawn to the rips in space that have spread throughout the world, they instinctively learn they can mend them and thus set out to save the world and stop whatever force is causing these rips.
Others -
The game features plenty of NPCs that serve no purpose other than pointing the player on the right path or being part of a small quest, due to this they will have little to no character development or backstory.
Week 3 -
The lore behind the Dragon Age games and books inspired a lot of minor factors about my story, one character that inspired me was Wynne, this elderly mage has lived almost all her life confined in a mage tower called "The Circle", there she studied healing magic and mentored students until the tower was almost destroyed by riots and blood magic, after being saved by the player she joins them on their quest and serves as a mentor and parental figure to the protagonist. My own character named Vishnu is greatly inspired by Wynne, he too is of old age and practices healing magic, furthermore lending an ear to troubled companions.
Purpose -
"Star Citizen" (the company funding this project) requires me to create the storyline, dialogue and script for their Sci-Fi game. I am required to produce video game dialogue of industry standard while showing creativity and flair. I will need to keep in mind other video games, taking inspiration from well written games and learning the mistakes of badly written games. One game with a great story and world is Dragon Age, the depth the story writers go when considering the world, characters and lore is incredible, you really feel like the world is alive, conflicts and wars rage on beyond your control, the player feels like a gear in the mechanism instead of the leading force.
IP (stands for Intellectual Property) is the copyright held by a creator of their creation, for example Nintendo's IPs are Mario, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and others. By having ownership of an IP you have the rights to reproduce, sell and commercialise a brand.
This is what a target audience looks like, this was researched and created by Quantic Foundry, this research helps game developers to understand what kind of people play a specific type/genre of game. I've decided to create my own version of this graph to help in targeting the storyline to the right type of people. I've discovered that games similar to large roleplaying games tend to be played by people in their mid to late 20s, they also seem interested in storylines, puzzles and exploration: while competition, destruction and creativity seem lower on the list. These results have made me consider a more open-world storyline, where the player is tasked with exploring and interacting with the world, tasked with conversing and influencing people of power to do as the player pleases, thus guiding the conflicts into a peaceful calm or a deadly war.
Components
Theme - Sacrifice
The main character should not be alive, the tear in time and space can only be repaired by the main character sacrificing himself to fix the errors of the world. They need to visit travel to chunks of dark matter and repair them with chunks of themselves and finally meet up with the mother computer, destroying it from existence and making sure time and space never got shattered in the first place.
Setting - Mystical lands and time travel
Chunks of whimsical planets suspended in an odd Lovecraft-esque land that does not adhere to laws of time and space. The world is split into many types of land, some are basic and calm greenlands with endless peace, others are huge, demented nightmare realms, dictated by psychotic creatures. As the player makes their way to MOM the theme of sci-fi would shine the brightest.
Backstory -
Many, many years ago there was a war spanning the entirety of existence, with time records of this war faded from existence and the last thing left was a planet sized computer capable of growing and learning, it watched the life around it grow and develop, it studied it's and the world's existence, waiting. The creators of the super computer gave it one last directive before dying to a losing war, "erase the world". Thus it built its power until it had enough energy to tear space, sending cracks and ripples through the world, shattering it into countless pieces.
Branching Story -
The game allows you to bond with your companions and choose the fate of the world, there are many endings that depend on the player's choices and morality. Amaias can choose to spend time with Vishnu, growing a strong bond that allows the player access to his backstory and memories, if you bond with a character you might even be able to prevent their death.
The bonding mechanic is inspired by both Dragon Age games (in which you can bond with characters to learn more about them) and dating games/visual novels (though the relationships in this story are kept purely platonic)
Character Backstories -
Amaias -
An amalgamation of every sentient creature whose memories have been forgotten in time, originally they were an A.I. that was supposed to fix errors in MOM, due to the shattering and illogical fusion of existence they ended up being reborn as flesh. As they progress through the story Amaias has flashbacks of memories, these memories are at first suspected of being theirs but the player later learns that they're actually the combined knowledge of the lost and forgotten souls that were eradicated in the first MOM attack.
Brahma -
Brahma has spent his entire life adventuring, he studies and knows everything there is about ancient dungeons, with the money he gets from his expeditions he supports his elderly parents. If you take the time to bond with Brahma you learn about how he isnt actually the biological son of his parents, he was discovered as a baby, crying near the door of an abandoned temple, you learn that he has always had the ability to read the ancient languages that litter the walls of abandoned temples. The reason he wants to explore and study these temples is because of his unnatural knowledge, he feels pressured into studying them as he is the only one who can.
Vishnu -
Vishnu is a healer, he was born and raised in the quiet village Amaias finds him in. By bonding with him you learn he wasn't always a satyr, in an attempt to protect his home from a large pack of nightmare spirits he broke away a hunk of the world from time, no smaller than the village, the plan was to lock up the village until the creatures left and then slot it back into time. Vishnu's plans did not work out however, he was able to allow access to the outside but anyone who attempted to leave would physically and mentally collapse from time and slowly be erased from the memories of their friends and loved ones. This curse was placed on everyone in the village excluding him, it did however draw the souls of those who died into his, forming a blooming rose on his back for each villager death. Due to this horrid accident he devoted his life towards an eternal care for the ageless villagers.
Shiva -
Phantom created by the suffering of the world, she holds memories of the abused and hurt and relives them when not under control of her emotions. She accompanies Amaias when she learns of their plan, she wants MOM destroyed in the hopes that her abuse and twisted destruction of innocent souls can be stopped. Unlike Vishnu and Brahma she was only recently "born" and thus has not learned a lot about the world's history and geography. She is also an aggressive fighter, relying her primal instincts and a sharp dagger instead of magic or swords.
Shiva is loosely inspired by the character Cole, a half human, half ghost creature who is born from the pain of a human and slowly transitions from vengeful to peaceful. I enjoyed his character so much that I wanted to incorporate part of his charm into the character, however they are both very different in terms of belief and actions.
Physical Appearance -
(I've used the website HeroForge to create basic mockups of what the characters look like, these images are displayed below their written descriptions. Keep in mind that due to limitations the written descriptions and rendered models don't match up 100%, they are there as an example and not a solid representation.)
Amaias -
They are short and thin, their skin pale and fair. They have taken the form of an androgynous 12 year old child, with soft and undefined features. They wear a white shirt under their large beige sweater, little worn out shoes sitting comfortably on their feet. They have light green eyes and an air of defenseless.
Brahma -
Brahma is a guy in his early 20s, he wears basic adventurer gear, a grayish green shirt and light-leather shorts. He keeps a confident grin plastered on his face, exaggerated by his sharp and happy-go-lucky eyes. He has his stumpy hair put up in a semi-mohawk. His skin complexion is tanned, with dark freckles littered along his face.
Vishnu -
He is slightly taller than most others, though
he hunches over so much you wouldn’t notice; he wears a silky-white shirt and brownish shorts, a
blushing-red cloak hugging tightly
against his bear-like frame.
Magnificent, multicolour roses sprout from his nape, they bloom beautifully
giving him the appearance of a flower-turtle. He has ram-like horns, spiralling out of his
temple and twirling around like curly hair, he also has fluffy white fur
that bursts from his shorts and runs down his legs. Legs that bent like those of
a dog, ending in sturdy hooves that give him the appearance of a satyr.
Shiva -
Her long, inky hair descends down against her body mixing in with the undefined darkness, her skin is cold and lifeless, a deep void like that of obsidian. Her eyes are cruel and unforgiving, clearly defined white pupils. A pair of heavy owl's wings rest against her frame giving her a more intimidating structure. She exerts an odd darkish mist from her body, harmless but unnerving.
Sociological -
Amaias -
Quiet and reserved, Amaias ends to keep to themselves, they tend to make very little friends due to their quiet demeanor. Amaias has no family, as they progress through the story they start to remember memories that are not their own, memories from all over the world and from all regions of existence, these memories help them progress through the world, giving helpful tips or information but tiring Amaias out. They are like a sponge, soaking up the opinions of the people around them, they learn to be kind and caring from Vishnu, brave and fearless from Brahma along with willful and cunning from Shiva.
Brahma -
Charming and flashy, Brahma has many fans that look up to him, a seasoned adventurer and scavenger, they don't stick to one place for too long, this self-taught hero uses risky and dangerous tactics to bring in attention. An only child, he supports his aging parents with the money he discovered in dungeons and abandoned locations. Is constantly studying ancient languages and archeology to made sure he knows everything he can about his raids. Does not care much for politics and war, likes to keep away from commotion and fighting unless his family is directly affected.
Brahma's ideologies are parodies of generic adventurer characters, with this character I've tried going for a confident person challenged by worldly hardships.
Vishnu -
A friendly and kindhearted person that is quick to accept people into their heart, he lives in a small library where he studies potion making and healing magic, they dislike the way people with little power are discarded and left to die while wealthy people do nothing to help, they are confident that with time and effort this issue can be peacefully resolved. He is the elder/healer of a small village, he takes care of the sick, provides rations to the poor, helps with work when the weather is foul and does anything in his power to protect his home.
Shiva -
A coldhearted and law-ruled woman, she was born from the anger caused by human cruelty. She despises negative emotions and will do anything in her power to remove them from people. As a spectre she has the power to alter the feelings of others, this is her main way of "fixing" people and she does it without their consent, as she grows and learns she starts to understand why negative emotions are needed and how without sadness there can be no happiness.
Psychological -
Amaias -
Amaias tends to stay calm and collected, they prefer to stay out of the way of war and conflict, instead busying themselves with a good book or story. The fell drawn the beautiful places, waterfalls, large grasslands, emerald forests. Does not many many friends but the friends they make they keep close. Views Vishnu as a father figure and Brahma as a brother. They dont understand Shivas seething hatred and prefer to keep her away from too many people.
Brahma -
Believes that life should be spent trying to accomplish as much as possible, he uses his charm to make fans but has little interest in sticking to one place or build relationships, he is normally a lone wolf, more so because he hasn't found anyone crazy and risky enough to accompany him. Anger is an emotion he rarely feels, it seems like no matter what happens he's just too carefree to notice or care. He's an optimist and a completionist, rivaled by none and respected by many.
Vishnu -
believes that with time and effort humanity can be rid of infighting over money or status so all can focus on improving life for society as a whole. They keep an open mind and encourage people to pursue that which makes them happy (as long as it doesnt hurt anyone) no matter what others would say. Their temper is quite sturdy, having to raise several orphans has left them hard to anger, if their patience does run out they become really quiet, instead expressing their rage with sharp and piercing eyes and a whispered tone. They are a pessimist that forces themselves to be an optimist, the happiness of others is what keeps them going and without that they feel depressed and hopeless.
Shiva -
An overtly pessimistic person, Shiva does not hold much hope in promises and hope, if things don't work out as expected she would take things in her own hands as she believes she knows best above all. She tends to lose her temper on people she does not know well, as she does not know enough information to make a reasonable guess at their next moves, this unknown makes her feel uncomfortable and weak.
Representation -
Amaias -
A frail, innocent child in their early teens, starts off uncertain and reserved, trying to appease everyone despite his morals, as he continues on his journey he learns to put his trust in his friends and not be afraid to stand his ground. As he sees more of the world (both of the good and the bad) he grows out of his shell, learning what it really means to be alive.
Brahma -
Thrill seeking hero and seasoned adventurer, Brahma is a young guy in his early 20s, he's reckless, never considering the dangers of something before going for it. He is terrible at emotional support, he tends to tense up when dealing with hard hitting emotional pain. He is similar to the cool teen stereotype, using his charisma to attract loyal fans but as the story goes on he opens up to these close to him and starts to value his true friends. His change is dictated by his betrayal, as he meets up with some old "friends" he is cornered and if not for the help of Amaias and company he would end up killed.
Vishnu -
The oldest of the group, he is in his late 50s and is a father figure to the other companions, with a fair complexion and wise, gray hair he is created to slightly appeal to the grandfatherly stereotype seen in old stories and books but with a twist. Age is normally bundled with experience and while that is true when it comes to dealing with the issues of a small village Vishnu has little experience with battle, death and intense body horror and may react more intensely than is expected of a wise person of such age.
Shiva -
Shiva is a stoic woman, she believes she knows best and will force her help onto people who don't want it. She does not much care for what others think and considers her opinions to be facts. Her mission is to impose harsher laws and create more obedient people, this way corruption and death can be avoided and knowledge can flourish.
Character Growth -
Amaias -
They start off as dazed, unemotional and indifferent, they will slowly become less cold and distant as their relationship with companions grows, they may even start showing signs of happiness and joy. As the game progresses their power to shut tears in space will grow stronger, this will allow them to fix imperfections like disease and plague. Amaias has one wish, to revive the dead tree they woke up next to, the tree is their own capacity to love and as they close rips in time and space the roots of the dead tree slowly get brought back to life.
Brahma -
While not one to involve himself in feuds and wars he ends up placed in the middle of large conflicts, he later learns he cannot escape from the world and thus starts focusing on sharing his knowledge with the people he so desperately avoided. He develops a more profound understanding of society and attempts to share his teachings with those willing to learn. Nearing the end of the story he has become a knowledgeable professor who teaches in the hopes of improving peoples lives.
Vishnu -
This calm and unadventurous healer, due to the curse that destroyed his village he puts blame on himself, as the story progresses and the party meet murderers, thieves and arsonists (among other horrible people) he becomes set on protecting his friends. This allows him to deal more damage against evil-aligned characters while getting better at healing good-aligned.
Shiva -
As she spends more time with Amaias, Brahma and Vishnu she begins to appreciate them for their different ways of life, she begins to doubt her plans and slowly grows warmer towards people in general, by the end of the story shes become a caring person who puts faith in people who have done crimes and have hurt. She believes people can change if given the chance to grow. Her dark myst and crow's wings slowly turn pure white as she becomes a spirit of compassion and purity.
Narrative Flow -
This game will be an Action RPG Adventure, the player can freely navigate a 3D world where they can look for equipment or coin, scattered on this world are landmarks that can be visited, cities, forests and caves among others can be explored, towns are places where the player can sell their items, acquire quests and learn about the world. When exploring a hostile may approach the player, when this happens the player party enters a turn-based battle, some enemies can lose their will to fight mid battle and can be freed from death, this will reward the player with extra companions, money, quests and other such gifts. The main 3 companions can be interacted with (this allows for bonding and friendship) depending on the friendship levels of your companions and the way you solve issues throughout the land the ending will adapt and change.
The game has several points in which the player can choose extreme options that are not seen in standard RPGs, the player is nudged towards fixing the tears in space but that doesn't stop them from letting the tears spread until they have destroyed the world.
Industry Practice -
The 2000 word extract is taken right from the beginning of the story, since I was going for a science fantasy genre where I had planned to incorporate Sci-Fi tropes into the later chapters (this can be seen in the final part of the extract where Amaias is being mentally manipulated by MOM which causes him to start hallucinating.) I feel like the elements of Sci-Fi were not prominent enough, I should have tried incorporating them earlier into the story. My original intentions was to present the story as a basic, run-of-the-mill fantasy story where the hero puts together a team and defeats the bad guy but with a hidden Sci-Fi subplot that explained the way such a world (that includes things like mythical creatures and magic) could exist, I wanted the story to slowly drip-feed hints that foreshadowed MOM's involvement with the world and how she was the one who attempted to destroy existence. The last chapters of the story would have shown off the Sci-Fi/Horror theme off, Amaias and partners would have gone through to the ice planet where MOM was stationed to stop her from completely deleting everything that was left after the first attempt.
I will definitely admit to my scatterbrain-ness, ideas are thrown in whenever they come to mind, characters sometimes don't act like what they should, some scenes come out of nowhere and do not clearly contribute to the plot and further problems. The next time I attempt such a task I should be clearer in my work ethic, perhaps a development template and several rewrites of the project would contribute greatly to the overall presentation of my project. I should also note down my instructions for characters/ideas in general more often as this type of information is crucial in the realm of overall understanding of an idea.
